Helen Birnbaum presents a startling view of the 21st century, a world that both old and new. Earthy, ancient ceramic is turned Pop Art with distinct colours and cheerful, cartoonish shapes, but the message is always immediate. She asks the viewer to consider difficult modern dilemmas brought to life by this ancient material. This contradiction makes you turn back and look at her figures again and again.
Birnbaum, who creates exciting sculpture in ceramic and mixed media, has exhibited her work widely. She received a BA from Cardiff University and an MA from UCLAN. Helen now lives in Skelmersdale (a 1960’s New Town), outside Liverpool, where she produces her ceramics and is part of a team developing a new arts’ centre and café.
